A Woman's Guide to Shaving with a Safety Razor

A Woman's Guide to Shaving with a Safety Razor

For decades safety razors have been men's best-kept secret.

Women have been influenced into using expensive razors through the illusion that a multi-blade, extra grip, pink razor with soap strips, will provide the perfect shave. It’s no secret that many women have switched to men’s razors to receive a closer shave all while avoiding the Pink Tax.

When it comes to clean shaving, nothing offers a smoother, more satisfying shave like a safety razor. But what happens when you want that smooth, close shave on other parts of the body?

The Benefits of a Safety Razor?

Switching to a plastic-free safety razor shave yields numerous benefits for your skin, the environment, and your wallet. Luckily, Rockwell Razors ensure that anybody can get the perfect shave, no matter which part of the body they’re shaving.

Better for Your Skin

From shaving your legs to your bikini area, a safety razor outperforms a cartridge razor every single time. It also helps reduce those annoying razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

How? Because unlike multi-blade razors, safety razors use a single double-edge blade that doesn't tug and pull. The weight of the safety razor handle allows it to glide smoothly across the skin. Plus, using a single blade and replacing it regularly instead of using one old cartridge for weeks at a time, means a much cleaner, more hygienic shave.

Of course, you'll also save a fortune in the long run on expensive disposables.

Women all over the world are blogging about using a safety razor for their legs, armpits and intimate areas as awareness increases that single blade = much better shave.

Adjustable "Beginner Settings"

Historically, using a safety razor came with a bit of a learning curve, but not anymore. Rockwell razors are fully adjustable, and the only safety razors with a "beginner setting”, which makes it impossible to cut yourself shaving. This eliminates any learning curve for beginners and a massive obstacle many women worry about.

Always remember to set the Rockwell Razor to the R1 setting, then adjust the setting up to R2 or R3 for more blade exposure if you're finding that it's too mild.

Yes, You Can Use Your Safety Razor For Your Legs

If you want clean, silky smooth legs, nothing else comes close to a safety razor. Many women (and men) who have never used a safety razor before see the exposed blade and instantly feel a sense of fear. Traditional safety razors should be used with a degree of caution, but as long as you're not "'pressing and dragging" as you would with a cartridge razor, the risk of nicks is minimal. Luckily, Rockwell Razors let you adjust the level of blade exposure so you can start off with a super mild setting, and shave worry-free with confidence that it won't cut you.

To eliminate the risk of nicks and cuts, we recommend investing in an adjustable Rockwell Razor. By allowing you to change the blade exposure and sticking to lower size settings, you'll have zero risks of messing up.

Once you finish your first shave and discover just how amazing your legs and bikini area feel, you'll wonder why you didn't make the switch sooner! Plus, once you realize that the price of 100 Rockwell Blades is equivalent to the cost of a  single disposable razor, you'll be saving hundreds of dollars a year.

Shaving Is Your Time

Shaving is a personal experience. It's one of the most intimate body care activities you do. It should be a time to enjoy the hot steam against your skin and the warm water of a bath against your body. Why rush it? With a safety razor, you'll rediscover your love for yourself as you let the handle glide across your skin.

1. Prepping Your Skin

Now that you've taken the plunge and are ready to try out shaving your legs and bikini zone with a safety razor (maybe you swiped your significant other's safety razor for a test run), it's time to prep your skin.

First, make sure to exfoliate. The best way to go about doing this is to take a shower or bath. Scrub the area to remove any skin cells. One of the main causes behind ingrown hairs and razor bumps is a razor pushing dead skin cells into a pore, blocking the hair. Plus, when you let your skin soak in hot water, it helps open up those pores, making it easier to shave.

Apply your shaving lotion, cream, butter, gel, or whatever else you like to use. You might find you like using something that is clear, especially if you have moles, but go with what you like and what you feel comfortable with.

2. Shaving

With your skin and hair thoroughly prepped for the shave, position the razor at a 45-degree angle to your skin and shave using short, gentle strokes. Let the weight of the razor do most of the work, you don’t need to apply the same pressure you would with a cartridge razor. This gives you control yet allows the weight of the handle to glide the razor. Remember, with a safety razor you don't want to apply pressure. You don't need to!

If you notice any irritation whatsoever, consider shaving "with-the-grain", in the same direction that the hair grows. This will provide a much milder shave and achieve the same level of closeness - it just may take a few extra passes. Irritation may also be a sign that the skin and hair might require additional lather.

You know how in TV commercials you'll see someone just pulling a razor blade up the entire length of their leg? Yeah, we don’t recommend that. Even with a cartridge razor, that's a quick way to cut yourself. With the safety razor, shave just a few inches at a time, and take extra care going around your ankles and behind the knee. Remember to take your time, try not to do this as you’re running late in the morning - that never ends well.

If you find the razor feels a tad too "aggressive", simply switch to one of the lower Rockwell Shave settings that come with your Razor to achieve a milder shave for sensitive skin.

3. Shaving The Bikini Zone

For sensitive areas, you will want to set your Rockwell Razor to the lower settings (R1 or R2) so you have the freedom to shave without worrying about accidentally nicking yourself. Keep in mind the number you see on the bottom of the razor will be the setting you are shaving with.

When shaving the bikini zone, pull your skin taut and shave with the grain, in the direction that the hair grows. Tight skin allows the blade to flow smoothly. If you've never tried it before, position yourself in a squat. This tightens the entire area (and conceals anything you want to avoid nipping).

Shaving your legs and bikini area isn't all that different from shaving a face. And a safety razor will give you the clean, smooth feeling skin you've been wanting. After just one try, you'll toss the rest of your cartridge razors away for good.
